Design Problem
People living in rural areas have to travel great distances to access healthcare. And it’s not uncommon for patients to resort to going to the emergency room to get a test, particularly if they are also uninsured.
People who don't realize that they get sick from influenza (flu) come to a public medical facility without wearing facemasks and risk infecting others in the waiting area.
"Flu virus spread mainly by tiny droplets expelled from the mouths and noses of infected people when they cough, sneeze or talk."
Challenge
How might we create an accessible healthcare experience that helps rural families enjoy affordable medical care, no matter whether they’re insured, and reduce healthcare costs overall?
Outcome Overview
Clinic in Hands is a mobile application, provides a delightful at-home medical test experience to help everyone can access affordable and convenient medical care.
Literature Review
I reviewed essays and reports to investigate direct-to-consumer (DTC) medical tests. And then I found that DTC medical test can be divided into two types, sensor test and lab test.
Cue Health Monitoring System
This is a deep health tracker, Cue. It is a connected diagnostic platform for doing self-serve medical tests at home. Collected a small biological sample with the included sample wand and slide it into one of Cue’s cartridge, which converts it to digital information that is sent to your mobile device.
The highlight of Cue is that it can detect influenza(flu) viruses.

Lab Test
We can do over 30 lab tests at home to gain insight into potential food sensitivities, men's/women's health, heart health and more without needing a trip to the doctor’s office.
Competitive Analysis
I studied two web platforms that offer many types of lab tests to have a better understanding of the whole process of lab tests.
Pros: Clear instructions and certifications to make it easy-to-use and trustworthy
Cons: No mobile platform; After test, only offer user the online consultation
Target Users
User Survey
I designed a detailed questionnaire(Survey link) and sent it to international students and natives who don't have primary care doctors or live far away from clinics.
Most people can accept at-home medical test and they have done it before. And they also prefer to mail samples in pre-paid package, recieve digital results, consult physicians face by face after test.
Pain Points
Project Goals
As an international student who doesn't have a primary care doctor, flu widespread across many states and I want to detect flu by myself when I get sick so that I can track my health in real-time without having to worry about flu-like symptoms.
